JD and Usha Vance may actually be the most insufferable couple to have ever graced the face of this earth -- and apparently, their old law school friends are trying to figure out just what in the hell happened to those two.
Usha Vance is the first-generation American daughter of parents who emigrated from India to the US. A highly educated woman, Usha first obtained a history degree from Yale with the highest honors in 2007, a master's at Cambridge, then returned to Yale for law school, where she met the man who would become her husband, J.D. Vance.
Both Usha and JD were known across Yale Law School for their liberal-leaning views, with JD once infamously referring to Donald Trump as "America's Hitler" to his then-college friend in 2016. But since their college days, the couple has dived headfirst into the MAGA cult of white nationalism, riding "America's Hitler's" coat tails straight to stardom.
And their old friends are positively flummoxed.
Vanity Fair has just released a new profile on Second Lady Usha Vance and tucked away in the mini tell-all is a confession from the Vances' old law school pals about their secret Signal group chat, where they sh-t talk the Second Couple.
Classmates can't make sense of how the "Never Trump Guy" has suddenly turned into the MAGA President's biggest, most vocal defender and right-hand man.
When it comes to Usha, who was previously known to have been registered as a Democrat and always leaned Left during her college days, her friends say they don't know what happened to her, but it's certainly not a result of being muzzled.
One friend told Vanity Fair, "It’s patronizing to say that she’s been silenced. She has chosen this."
Another classmate, who chose to speak to the magazine anonymously, said they believe that Usha is actually the driving force behind what J.D. Vance has become.
"She built JD into this creation of the coastal Acela corridor," she told Vanity Fair, adding, "It’s not an immigrant story; it’s a meritocracy story."
Other classmates remember Usha as someone quiet about her politics, but loud about her desire to get to the top, calling the now-Second Lady a "gold star chaser": "I never understood why she was trying so hard."
One former classmate goes so far as to theorize that Usha played a heavy hand in her husband's infamous refusal to condemn white nationalist podcaster Nick Fuentes, who, in 2024, publicly questioned how a man (J.D.) who is married to an Indian woman (Usha) could possibly "support white identity."
"Usha must have been okay with it," the friend suggested to the magazine, adding that JD's decision to keep his mouth shut and decidedly not defend his wife "is a choice."
Something tells me they're not invited to Friendsgiving anymore.
