It hasn't even been two weeks since Jeanine Pirro effectively spit directly in Donald Trump's eyeball by dropping the federal vandalism charges he was championing against former Olympian David Hearn for picking up a chunk of paint out of his ridiculous Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, leaving the President positively enraged and her job hanging in Limbo.
Now, Jeanine Pirro is up to something weird.
According to a new report from the Washington Post, the former Fox News talking head turned United States attorney for the District of Columbia has suddenly begun to impanel a special grand jury in Washington, D.C., leading people to wonder just what in the Hell she's up to now.
Special grand juries are particularly rare and differ from a typical grand jury in that they can release a report that could potentially reveal critical information about the subject of an investigation, even if no one is actually brought to trial in the case they're overseeing.
The fact that she's pulling a special grand jury together at all is enough to raise eyebrows in and of itself. But to make matters even more bizarre, no one seems to know who Jeanine Pirro is targeting here.
According to three separate government officials who spoke with The Post, the D.C. special grand jury is being overseen by one of Pirro's top allies inside her office, Steven Vandervelden. Vandervelden has played a critical role in some of the most controversial and high-profile cases to come out of Pirro's office since Trump handed her the job -- including the failed probe into then-Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and an inquiry into the D.C. police force on allegations of tampering with their own crime statistics. Both of those cases spectacularly crashed and burned into a pile of utter failure and embarrassment.
While the subject of this new special grand jury's investigation remains unclear, experts told the outlet that Pirro's move is particularly "notable," given that Trump hired Pirro to the D.C. position with the sole purpose of using her as a vehicle to prosecute his political enemies in his wide-sweeping revenge plot.
Elon University law professor Steve Friedland said, "This could be very interesting. Each administration has its own approach to how it enforces the law and how it uses the tools available to it."
Legal experts are already speaking out, saying that there is no known "recent precedent" that would warrant the convening of a special grand jury in D.C.. However, they noted that it's always possible for cases to escape public notice.
Roger Williams University professor Niki Kuckes, who boasts a specific expertise in grand jury procedures, said, "They are very unusual. Sometimes they can issue a report, which a regular grand jury can't do."
There's absolutely no denying that Donald Trump wanted Pirro's head on a stick the moment she dropped the federal charges against David Hearn. Reports indicated that Pirro was spotted dashing to the White House with boxes full of materials that she hoped would exonerate herself with the President, as Trump publicly admonished her over and over again, indicating that the future of her position was now up in the air. While she's managed to hang onto her gig by the skin of her teeth so far, one can only imagine how intense the pressure from the top has become. It's relatively safe to assume that Donald Trump has demanded something big from her to make up for humiliating him in the Reflecting Pool case.
God help whoever's on the other end of this thing because Pirro is officially desperate, with nothing left to lose.
