On this day in 1933, my pal Harlan Ellison, one of the most influential speculative-fiction writers of the twentieth century and, was born. Trying to summarize the breadth and influence of his life as a writer, critic, editor, activist and raconteur would be the work of weeks not a couple of paragraphs. Ellison was routinely described as the most-awarded living writer in speculative fiction. Whether or not that remained literally true in later years, he amassed one of the most astonishing trophy shelves in American letters: Hugos, Nebulas, Edgars, Bram Stokers, Writers Guild Awards, World Fantasy Awards, PEN honors, and multiple lifetime-achievement recognitions.
But for all of his literary accomplishments, what many people who never read a word of his fiction remember best about him was many appearances on The Late, Late Show with Tom Snyder show. One of which is your video today.
The Editorial Board: The blasphemy of billionaires and the decadence of pundits who defend their obscenity.
The Rectification of Names: Don the Builder.
The Field Negro: The united marks of America. (The great American con)
