Meet the Press host Kristin Welker refused to accept Sen. Tim Scott's many lies and attempts to blame former President Biden on Trump's failed economy that has resulted in inflation and gas prices.
In a lengthy interview with the South Carolina Senator, the topic finally turned to Trump's new war with Canada, tariffs, high inflation and gas prices
Welker delivered the horrible facts facing the country today in no uncertain terms. From the start, Scott refused to accept reality and turned his attention to Biden, trying to frame it as an Adam and Eve proposition.
"You're talking about a really important issue of costs. Let's look back at the original sin of cost in America in the last eight years," Scott said. "It goes to Joe Biden, who took inflation --" Welker interrupted. "Wait, President Trump has been in office for two years."
That forced Scott to lie and claim that "Trump has brought inflation from a sky-high 21% over the Biden years down to under 5% and right now hovering near 4%."
Not to be outdone, Welker replied, "Inflation was at 3% when President Biden left office, it's at 3.4% right now. And the average household has paid $1,000 more in 2025 due to the tariffs, Senator."
This lead Scott down his prepared talking points including claiming the ecconomy is humming and Democrats are taking money out of the working class' pockets.
WELKER: These are the facts, when President Trump took office, inflation was at 3%.
It's now at 3.4%. Gas prices are over $4 a gallon, up over a dollar from a year ago. President Trump's tariffs have cost American households nearly $2,000.
He promised he was going to bring prices down on day one. Did he break that promise? Prices have gone up.
When Scott made a stupid comment, she continued.
WELKER: But we're not talking about Joe Biden, though. The Biden administration is over. More jobs. This is the Trump administration. We're two years into the Trump administration.
SCOTT: It's a contrast. It's a contrast, Kristen
A contrast! Hahahahaha. It certainly is. Scott swiftly began attacking Democratic candidates instead of discussing the economy because his lies had fallen flat.
WELKER: : Senator, President Trump himself says he owns this economy.
Is this now the Trump economy? He's been in office for two years. We're not talking about Joe Biden. We're talking about President Trump. He's the guy in office.
Scott's folksy cadence did not help him.
Welker refused to be silenced and said, " Senator, again, inflation was at 3% when President Trump took office."
I'll give the Meet the Press host credit here because she repeatedly refused to get sidetracked. She kept going back to Trump's economy and refused to fall for Sen. Scott's many obfuscations and outright lies.
Their whines about Biden is boring and untenable, but that's all Sen. Scott had to defend Trump with.
The next step to try and get republicans to discuss the economy would be for TV producers to have to have a hook at the ready and yank Republicans out of their chairs if they continually blame Biden, but until then, Welker did good.
