Sen Ted Cruz and Sen. Roger Marshall called a Democrat running for the U.S. Senate a heretic. The candidate they attacked is a pastor in a United Methodist Church. Cruz and Marshall target Adam Hamilton, the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in Kansas. Media outlet Kansas.com explains the reason for the aggressive attack.
“Marshall finds himself facing something he’s never seen before, an opponent with a decent chance of actually beating him, the Rev. Adam Hamilton.”
Less than a week after winning his primary, the GOP senators are already launching what some call a modern-day Spanish Inquisition. For those who may not be versed in the horrors of religious persecution, the Spanish Inquisition was a dark period in history known for extreme religious fanaticism, harsh intolerance of different beliefs, and strict demands for ideological purity.
Does that sound familiar? It should because it's the type of religious extremism the GOP is trying to implement in America.
Kansas.com journalist Dion Lefler wrote:
“Marshall and Cruz have appointed themselves The Kansas Inquisition…attacking mainstream Christian beliefs for lacking the zealotry and bigotry they associate with Christ’s ministry and message on Earth.”
Ted Cruz Hateful Tweet
Extreme right-wing media outlet Breitbart News is blasting a video on social media of the Kansas pastor and Senate candidate explaining why people of different religions aren’t going to hell. The pastor says he believes Jews, Hindus, and Muslims aren’t condemned to suffer in the afterlife because they aren’t Christian.
Radical. Hamilton sounds like that guy, Jesus, who talked about loving your neighbor and taking care of other people.
Republicans like Cruz and his pal Roger Marshall appear to believe being a Christian means putting people in concentration camps and taking health insurance away from people who need it.
Cruz shared the video of Hamilton explaining why people of different religions aren’t going to hell, tweeting:
"Why do Democrats keep nominating 'preachers' who reject the central tenets of Christianity? This heretical 'sermon' directly contradicts the Bible:
'Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6.'"
Huffington Post reported that after Cruz tweeted that Hamilton “rejected the central tenets of Christianity,” Sen. Marshall thanked him for it.
Too Woke for Kansas?
Huffington Post noted that Marshall and Republicans Republicans want to position Adam Hamilton as
“…Too woke for conservative Kansas, where no Democrat has won a Senate seat for more than a century.”
While Sen. Marshall has been squawking about how "woke" his Democratic opponent is, Marshall's own pastor disagrees with the Senator.
Joshua Leu is the pastor of the First Christian Church in Great Bend, Kansas, where Roger Marshall is a member. Pastor Leu told the Huffington Post that he's followed Adam Hamilton and that the Senate candidate is not the radical leftist that Marshall claims he is. Leu said about Hamilton:
“I would say that he’s a middle-of-the-road pastor who is willing to listen to all sides, and then based on his understanding of the gospel, try to make the best decision. But he knows he could be wrong, and is willing and able to allow others to disagree with him, and not hate them. He’s pretty good at loving his enemies.”
