Last week, Donald Trump announced he had “concluded a deal” to screw American ranchers by importing 300,000 metric tons of beef, which he claimed to be doing for the sake of lowering prices. But only temporarily. The plan is to lower prices for 90 days, just long enough to get past the midterms. Not surprisingly, the announcement enraged the cattle industry, most of whom are – or were – Trump supporters, and even prompted a spinal growth spurt among some Republicans.
There was also a big red flag: Trump’s omission of the name of the foreign country or countries involved or the terms of the deal.
Agricultural Secretary Brooke Rollins was asked by a reporter on Tuesday, “What specific countries have been in talks with the US about stepping up their beef imports?”
“I am not privy to talk about that,” she responded.
So, it’s some kind of top secret whom Trump is plotting with to try to make himself look good at the expense of his base?
Rollins also said about the deal Trump claimed to have “concluded” last week, “I think the conversations are still going on.” She added that Ambassador Jamieson Greer is “finalizing what exactly that looks like and I think the president is involved in that as well.”
Given that Trump is involved, you have to wonder if one or more of our adversaries is working to bribe him to backstab the beef industry under the guise of helping with affordability. We know Trump is corrupt enough and stupid enough to fall for such a scheme.
Greer and Trump are the same team that just caused the needless trade war with Canada that will screw Americans over, too.
I think we can expect this negotiating to work out just as well for us.
